Growing up my family always had Thanksgiving dinner as my birthday dinner. A good deal for me since I LOVE turkey with gravy and cranberry-orange relish. Delicious! Probably nice for my mom not having to deal with all my menu ideas, the turkey was a lot of work but I also have a tendency to create over ambitious menus when given the power. And usually your birthday is when you get do decide what's being served. So somehow turkey day turned in to Emily day. Which is not really what the day is about... Even though I liked it that way and the day is still a lot about food. But in the spirit of being more mature and being in the country where nobody cares that it's my birthday next week and therefore not at all related to turkey day. So what am I thankful for? Well I'm glad you asked!
I'm thankful for
- My amazing husband, that I love more and more even though that shouldn't be possible. He is my soulmate that keeps me sane and happy. He's also really hot.
- My family. I have always been very attached to my family, even through my difficult teens. For I while I hated our family vacations, now I miss them. In my mind it would be a great idea to pack everybody in to a car and go camping again!
- My family in-law. That I have gotten to know over the past 7 years and gotten really attached to. I've been so fortunate to fall in love with this family. They are supportive and encouraging and I miss them terribly.
- All of my huge extended family. Because there are fantastic. I love my grandma, aunts and uncle, godmother, my cousins, all of Sebs grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins etc. They are really to many to keep track of in this category. But I miss them terrible when I can't see them as often as I want. Which would be at least once a week.
- My friends! To many to mention. But I really have wonderful friends. I'm looking forward to my visits coming up all through pre christmas season.
- My home. Where ever it is. That I have more than one home.
- Being able to eat hot food whenever I want. I especially appreciate being able to eat hot breakfast in the winter time. Even though I poured curry instead of cinnamon on my oatmeal this morning... Not a good idea!
- The opportunity to go to school in this crazy city. A good experience that I'm going to cherish my hole life.
etc etc etc
I could continue this list forever. So this year turkey day is spent up in Harlem with people from all over the world. My Puerto Rican friend Alicia is hosting and got up 5am to put the turkey in the oven. Good job! So hopefully I remember my camera and can show off our fantastic meal.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
